Minutes

January 19, 2011

Present: Patricia B. Learned (Interfaith Ministries), Melinda Pankratz (PIRE), Ellie Morris (Chatham Cy Public Health Dept), Brittany Goldston (Boys & Girls Club), Shirelle Lee (Chatham County Together), Kaitlin Holder (Student – Northwood), Suz Robinson (Chatham Cy Schools), Silvio Balcazar (Hispanic Liaison), Colleen Hughes (US/PDFNC), George Greger-Holt (Chatham Cy Schools), Susan Powell (CCADFrY) Troy Roberson (Pittsboro PD)

Susan welcomed everyone and the group introduced themselves as several new members were in attendance.

Troy reported on the meeting with school Driver’s Education teachers and including the Fatal Vision experience as part of the curriculum. Troy will be presenting to all Driver Ed classes. Students will use the glasses and experience a field sobriety test. He expects to teach over 600 students per year.

Susan reported on Operation Medicine Drop. The Sheriff’s Office, Pittsboro Police Department, Siler City Police Department, Alcohol Law Enforcement and Chatham County Public Health Department agreed to cooperate on holding six events countywide on March 26. The goal will be 50,000 dosage units. Volunteers were solicited from the group.

Susan reported on youth advocacy training. Erik Rowles has been contracted as the presenter and has a capacity of 150 youth. Groups from El Vinculo and the three high school SADD groups will be invited. The training will focus on youth involvement and changing social norms. There will also be training for adult leaders and if the coalition approves, the training may continue through the life of the grant. The event is planned for March 26. Silvio reported that there might be a Latino youth summit in Raleigh planned for that weekend as well. He agreed to send the information about that youth summit to Susan.

Colleen reported on the Tobacco Reality Unfiltered groups beginning at Horton and Chatham Middle schools. Recruitment will be held at lunch within the next two weeks. Kyle Smith from Unlimited Success will be the faculty advisor.

Susan reported on the new website, which is now live. The address is www.chathamdrugfree.org. She encouraged all to visit and offered to add links to other community organizations.

Susan reported on the death of the acronym CCADFrY. While that will continue to be the official name of the organization, it will forever now be known as CDF – Chatham Drug Free – simple yet eloquent.

Shirelle reported that Chatham County Together would conduct a training on Tuesday, January 25 for volunteers to work with youth who have incarcerated parents.

Susan introduced PACT360. Information was included on the back of the agenda that was provided to members.

After considerable difficulty with the projection technology, part of the parent program was shown. There was discussion about how the parent training and video could be used.

Patricia asked whether the coalition has had interaction with AA, NA, Alanon and Alateen. George reported that in the past, there have been some Alanon/Alateen groups held in school during lunch. Suz reported that there are Children of Addicts groups that are conducted in school. It was suggested that an alcohol and other drug fair could be held at the high schools. It could include a recovery panel, films, treatment resources and healthy alternatives.

Ways to use PACT360 were discussed. Susan suggested using the program for parents of elementary students. Melinda suggested a section on how parents can talk to their children. Susan said that the coalition would have financial resources to market the program. Patricia suggested using some of the resources to train teachers.

Brittany reported that the Boys & Girls Club uses a program called Street Smarts, but that this program would be good to present to those groups.

Shirelle suggested using the program to present to their participants, mentors and parents.

Susan reported that there is also a Spanish language version and there are blank spots on the PowerPoint that coalitions can add their own local data.

Patricia agreed to spread the word through the Interfaith Ministries, although she didn’t see this as a project that the Interfaith Ministries would take on. She also provided names of ministers that might be interested.

Next meeting was scheduled for Wednesday, February 16, 2011 at 3:30 in the Pittsboro Police Department office at CCCC on the Pittsboro campus.

No further business, the meeting was adjourned.

Respectfully Submitted,

George Greger-Holt
