October 20, 2010

Present: George Greger-Holt, Susan Powell, Troy Roberson, Daisy Womble, Renita Foxx, Rob Schooley, Will Hall, Larry Powell, Erika Gabriel, Suz Robinson

Susan opened the meeting and had all introduce themselves.

Troy reported on the assembly at Northwood High School and the Fatal Vision goggle and golf cart presentation on October 13. Between 350 and 400 students observed the demonstration, with about 60 students participating. He said it was the biggest demonstration since the Pittsboro PD acquired the equipment. Susan reported that on the post experience questionnaire, 56 of 60 students said it was realistic, 53 of 60 said it changed their opinion about whether someone could drive when they were intoxicated and 45 of 60 said they were surprised by the experience.

Daisy reported on the speaker at the end of the day. She played Jeopardy and discussed myths about substance abuse with the students. She thought it was well received by the students.

The grant Kick Off was discussed. It is planned for November 19 from 8:30 – 10:30 in the new library. Susan presented samples of the invitation with the new CCADFrY logo. She expects to invite about 80 people, with 50 expected to attend.

Susan reported that Mano is planning on changing his youth group to Siler City recruiting students from Jordan-Matthews. Mano and Susan are attending the TRU training on Friday, October 22. Suz suggested that Mano contact her for referrals and identified several existing groups he could use as partners.

Susan discussed the Safe Homes Pledge. The Pledge will be promoted at the Pittsboro Street Fair on October 23. A lock box will be raffled to those who sign the Pledge. It coincides with the coalition’s attempt to educate parents about the need to lock up alcohol and prescription drugs. Those who sign the pledge will be put on the list serve. Eventually, those who sign the pledge will be given a static cling sign indicating that they have a Safe Home.

Susan reported that the marketing and website consultants are working on a new home logo.

Susan reported on the Safe Stores campaign. It is scheduled to begin in November or December. The new Pantry regional manager has been invited to join the coalition. David McQuoid was very instrumental in getting all of his clerks trained in responsible sales. A static cling sticker will be given to stores that comply with the requirements for training staff.

Suzanne reported that the AIM club at Jordan-Matthews is very interested in helping the coalition.

Susan reported on Operation Medicine Drop. She would like the coalition to consider planning four per year. Funding will be available to support the effort. Susan explained the project to those who were not involved in the first effort. Larry and Susan said that Walgreens now has an envelop for disposal of medicines but charge $3 for disposal. A new law allows people to dispose of other people’s medicines. Troy reported that the coalition would definitely hold one in March during National Child Safety month.

Renita explained Project Turnaround. She has many youth in the program, with the majority of her clients between the ages of 16 – 25. The majority are using marijuana and alcohol. She has surveyed her clients, and found that their use began between the ages of 12 – 13. She conducts youthful offender groups for clients ages 16 – 20. Clients report that students need more education on consequences and long reaching effects of the consequences.

The coalition talked about ways to get systematic education to students. Suz reported it was hard to find someone in the school to deliver the curriculum. Larry suggested a curriculum tied to Safe Homes for parents.

Susan reported that the faith-based community might be an alternative venue. Suz reported that there are 5 AME churches in Pittsboro that could be approached to bring together their youth groups. Larry said that those meetings would probably draw parents who didn’t think they had a problem, and an approach was needed to attract parents who are concerned about their children. Daisy suggested getting on the agenda for an existing district youth group meeting. She suggested that Saundra Gardner might be a good contact. Pat Regan-Alston was also suggested as a contact.

It was suggested putting social host laws on the back of the Safe Homes Pledge.

Susan provided a video, “Alcohol and the Teenage Brain,” for viewing. Suz suggested the PAC 360 as an alternate. Susan will view it to see which one is more appropriate. Videos will be donated to area libraries for parents to check out.

Susan and George will work on statistics from the Alcohol and Other Drug survey. Susan plans to meet with Melinda and Bev on Nov. 1 to create the PowerPoint for the Kick Off. It was suggested that the meeting start with some of this data.

Next coalition meeting is scheduled for November 17 at 3:30 in the Pittsboro Police Department satellite office in CCCC Building 1.

The next event planning meeting is scheduled for November 2 at 10:00 in the Pittsboro Police Department satellite office in CCCC Building 1.

No further business, the meeting was adjourned.

ANNOUNCEMENTS/UPDATES:

Susan and Troy shared highlights of their recent visit to DC as part of the White House Drug Free Community Grant of which CCADFrY is a recipient for the next five years. While there they met the Director, Deputy Director and Division Supervisor of the grant. It is highly likely that at least one of them will visit us during the next few years for a community event.

Troy was also able to arrange a tour of the West Wing where Bo was frolicking in the Rose Garden and Oprah was also seen from afar. Susan loved seeing Bo.

Susan reported that the CCADFrY website has a new URL – chathamdrugfree.org. The website will be live soon. Susan also reported that the first electronic newsletter was sent to members on December 9, 2010.

Susan also announced that Maria Soto, CCADFrY’s former Hispanic Outreach liaison resigned to accept a full time position with Chatham County Together! Susan met with community partners at Hispanic Liaison and El Futuro who have agreed to work closely with us to reach our Latino families.

AGENDA ITEMS:

Parenting/Safe Homes - Suz asked for input on locations for the parenting workshops to be held February – May 2011. Members in attendance agreed to hold two workshops in Siler City (one at the Armory and one at a faith-based site) and two in Pittsboro (one at Margaret Pollard and one at a faith-based site).

A Parent/Safe Home Committee was formed with Travis and Troy signing up as members, along with Suz. Alison, Ellie and Addis expressed interest. Any other members are welcome to email Suz (This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.) and let her know you would like to be part of the committee.

Suz and Susan will meet Tuesday, December 21st to discuss the parent/safe homes committee. Suz will then contact all individuals to expressed interest in the subcommittee to arrange a meeting prior to the next CCCADFrY meeting so an agenda and the first location, date and time can be arranged prior to the next CCADFrY meeting.

Susan passed around the new Safe Homes/Safe Stores logo. She then reported that the goal of Safe Homes is to increase awareness in communities about the risk factors present in neighborhoods; to determine if policies are appropriate and if not to develop new policies; and to survey community norms around safe homes.

Youth Training – Susan announced that Erik Rowles would provide training for SAAD groups in March. If CCADFrY likes the program, Erik will be hired for future youth training.

Colleen reported that Kyle Smith would lead the TRU (Tobacco Reality Unfiltered) Groups at Chatham and Horton Middle Schools. Recruitment will be held in January and events will be held the rest of the year.

Troy and Susan discussed the partnership that CCADFrY has agreed to with Pantry, Inc (Kangaroo stores) as part of SAFE stores. All Kangaroo employees will receive free BAR training by an Alcohol Law Enforcement (ALE) agent. CCADFrY will pay for the training.

Melinda will create employee underage alcohol sales attitude pre/post surveys for employees. Susan will need CCADFrY volunteers to assist Troy in collecting the attitude surveys. Troy will coordinate underage youth purchase surveys, with officers in attendance, upon completion of the training.

Kangaroo managers shared that employees currently participate in online training, which is extremely ineffective.

Medicine Drop – Troy announced that the statewide medicine drop campaign would begin in midMarch. This year there will be multiple locations for medicine to be dropped off in a coordinated effort across Chatham County. Pittsboro Police, Siler City Police, and Chatham County Sheriff’s Department will all participate in the collections. Troy recommended that we purchase additional banners so one will be available at each site. He also asked for volunteers to be willing to assist with the medicine drop-off. Last year the collection time was on a Friday afternoon from noon – 4pm.

Logic Model – Susan requested that we move developing the Logic Model to next year. With all that we are undertaking this year, there were no objections.

Next meeting will be held Wednesday, January 19, 2011 in Troy Roberson’s office at CCCC on the Pittsboro campus.

No further business, the meeting was adjourned.

January 19, 2011

After considerable difficulty with the projection technology, part of the parent program was shown. There was discussion about how the parent training and video could be used.

Suz reported that there are Children of Addicts groups that are conducted in school. It was suggested that an alcohol and other drug fair could be held at the high schools. It could include a recovery panel, films, treatment resources and healthy alternatives.

Ways to use PACT360 were discussed. Susan suggested using the program for parents of elementary students. Melinda suggested a section on how parents can talk to their children. Susan said that the coalition would have financial resources to market the program. Patricia suggested using some of the resources to train teachers.

Brittany reported that the Boys & Girls Club uses a program called Street Smarts, but that this program would be good to present to those groups.

Shirelle suggested using the program to present to their participants, mentors and parents.

Susan reported that there is also a Spanish language version and there are blank spots on the PowerPoint that coalitions can add their own local data.

Patricia agreed to spread the word through the Interfaith Ministries, although she didn’t see this as a project that the Interfaith Ministries would take on. She also provided names of ministers that might be interested.

Next meeting was scheduled for Wednesday, February 16, 2011 at 3:30 in the Pittsboro Police Department office at CCCC on the Pittsboro campus.
